The new Mazda CX-5 is based on its predecessor, so it's no more practial. But it looks a lot more stylish and has a much classier interior. The latest Volkswagen Tiguan makes a great family car. It oozes practicality and, while it's an expensive choice, it's good to drive and has a smart interior. To keep costs down, we recommend opting for a mid-range diesel model in SE Nav trim. This still gets you sat-nav as well as three-zone climate control, cruise control and the more comfortable seats.
