7. Mazda CX-5 2.2 Skyactiv-D SE-L Nav
List price £25,295
The new Mazda CX-5 is based on its predecessor, so it's no more practial. But it looks a lot more stylish and has a much classier interior. It's also one of the most comfortable large SUVs around, soaking up poorly surfaced roads better than rivals such as the Peugeot 5008. And yet the CX-5 is still fun to drive because the well-weighted steering gives you the confidence to place the car exactly where you want it.
6. BMW X1 sDrive 18d SE
List price £27,990
BMW's smallest and cheapest SUV is still a practical and premium choice. There are plenty of versions on offer, too, including some with four-wheel drive. Our favourite remains the two-wheel-drive model, though, paired with the cheapest diesel engine. Even the entry-level SE trim has everything you need.
5. Volkswagen Tiguan 2.0 TDI 150 SE Nav
List price £28,825
The latest Volkswagen Tiguan makes a great family car. It oozes practicality and, while it's an expensive choice, it's good to drive and has a smart interior. To keep costs down, we recommend opting for a mid-range diesel model in SE Nav trim. This still gets you sat-nav as well as three-zone climate control, cruise control and the more comfortable seats.
