If you want a fully convertible car that is well equipped and handles superbly, the 3 Series Convertible may be the one for you. There are plenty of lively petrol and diesel engines to choose from, but the 2.5-litre six-cylinder petrol version we found is especially good. All of them handle well and are great fun to punt down a winding country lane. The dash design is logical, if a little sombre. Build quality is high, though, so it should be free from irritating squeaks and rattles, despite not having a roof.

6. Toyota MR2
Buy a regular Ferrari or Lamborghini and the chances are it will be a mid-engined two-seater, just like this MR2. Toyota managed to pack its little roadster with just enough power for it to be truly fun without it costing a supercar-like fortune to run. Now, the MR2 is on the verge of becoming an appreciating classic, and rightly so; it’s great to drive, with a lusty 1.8-litre engine, a slick gearchange, terrific handling and a hood that can be put up or down easily with one hand from the driver’s seat. Although these cars might have been used enthusiastically, reported troubles are pleasingly few.

Some convertibles claim to be able to seat four people but turn out to be nothing more than a space to store the shopping. The A4 convertible, though, does have space for actual humans. And they’ll look good in it, because this car is one of the classiest drop-tops around. There are all sorts of strong petrol and diesel options to choose from and you can even have four-wheel drive. It’s good to drive too, despite the firm ride.
