4. Mini Convertible

Best used convertibles for less than £10,000 (and the ones to avoid)

No wonder the Mini Convertible’s so popular. It combines the retro styling of the Mini hatchback with a fabric roof that slides away at the touch of a button to create a usable four-seat convertible that’s about as stylish as they get. And, like its regular sibling, the Convertible is great fun to drive, and endowed with the same super-stylish interior. Don’t expect to seat four adults in comfort, mind, as the rear seats are rather cramped, and the boot’s tiny. However, if you can live with reduced practicality in favour of fun and fashion, the Convertible should be high on your list.

3. Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet

Best used convertibles for less than £10,000 (and the ones to avoid)

Practical, comfortable, smart and classy, the Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet blends all of the superb traits of the Golf hatchback into an al fresco package that might not offer the same style as some of its rivals, but makes up for that with a combination of usability and ease-of-ownership that makes it our top four-seater pick. True, it isn’t as much fun to drive as some of the other drop-tops here, but if you’re after a practical, family-friendly convertible that you can use every day, there isn’t much better.

The Audi TT has become a bit of a legend in its own lifetime, and this second-generation version is a real cracker. First of all, it’s great fun to drive, with agility and strength bestowed upon it by its aluminium construction, and while its ride is firm, the TT remains supple over all but the worst ruts. Then there’s the beautifully made interior with top-quality plastics, and the fabulous performance – or economy, should you choose a diesel model. There really is little to dislike here, which is why the TT is one of our top picks.
