Best used estate cars for less than £2000 (and the ones to avoid)
Vast estates needn’t be expensive. Here are the ten best for less than £2000, along with the ones to avoid...
The cynical among you might just think the Mondeo Estate is perenially our favourite because we cannot be bothered to think of anything else. Not so. The Ford Mondeo is a hugely accomplished car, and thanks to the value and scale of Ford, you'll have no trouble finding a garage to work on it, and parts prices are reasonable, too. But that’s not all, because the Mondeo handles better than its contemporaries and, even better, does so without making you suffer an uncomfortable ride. High-spec versions offer some big car luxury items including heated and cooled front seats.

And the estates to avoid…
Perhaps some of the low-mileage ones might be worth a look; but the reality is that many of the cheap Saab 9-3 Sportwagons will have been bought up by people looking for a bargain after the company went bust and have since been run into the ground, making them money pits. And even if you do find a good example, you’ll have to put up with a cheap interior that is unbecoming of a Saab, and there's no dealer support following the death of the brand in 2012.
The Stilo Multiwagon is cheap, but that’s the only good thing going for it. It's bland, has flimsy build quality, is mediocre to drive and is likely to break down; a more reliable option would be to invest your money in a season rail ticket, which is saying something.
