1. BMW 3 Series
The 3 Series has been so good in all of its various generations that it’s come to define the compact executive saloon class. Why has it been so successful? Because it drives beautifully and is lovely to be in, is economical to run and has an upmarket, and sporty, image. It’s also well equipped in most forms, and reliable in long-term use. Such popularity means it isn’t always cheap, but you do get what you pay for. However, our budget should still net you a 2004 car in good condition, and that’s a lot of very good car for not a great deal of dosh.
And the executive car to avoid…
The good news is you can buy a 2007 Magentis for our budget, but the bad news is that nearly every other executive saloon does nearly everything else just that little bit better.
