1. BMW X3
The current BMW X3 has long been one of our favourite SUVs, and the good news is that the pre-facelift model, now available within this budget, is just as good. You get a choice of great engines, fantastic handling and a soundly-built interior with an intuitive infotainment system. The only real downside is the slightly firm ride, but it isn’t so bad that you wouldn’t be able to get used to it, especially if you go for a softly-sprung SE model.
Reliability niggles do persist, though, including several reported instances of stretched timing chains on 2.0-litre diesel models - this can lead to catastrophic engine damage, so make sure the car you’re buying has been well-maintained and is fault-free.
We found: 2013 xDrive20d SE, 13,000 miles, £23,995
