Best used SUVs for less than £5000 (and the ones to avoid)

A good, usable, family-friendly used SUV can easily be had for less than £5000 these days. Here are the best, and the ones to avoid...

Nissan Qashqai

1. Nissan Qashqai

It's smaller than many of the other SUVs here, but as a result the Nissan Qashqai is much easier to drive. What's more, it still offers enough space for most families inside, and with Nissan's enviable reputation for reliability, the Qashqai should be reliable. While it isn't the sharpest thing to drive, it's tidy enough for most, and its soft suspension gives a really lovely ride quality that feels soothing on longer journeys. And even though the interior isn't as swanky as some SUVs', it's still well laid-out and very easy to use, while the 1.5-litre diesel is punchy, smooth and economical. Avoid diesel Qashqais that haven't been given regular runs on the motorway, though, as patchy use can cause engine problems.

We found: 2009 1.5 dCi Acenta, 68,000 miles, full service history, £4995

And the SUVs to avoid…

Ssangyong Kyron

Best used SUVs for less than £5000 (and the ones to avoid)

Offensively ugly and terrible to drive, the Ssangyong Kyron’s only redeeming feature is that it’s pretty capable off-road.

Jeep Cherokee

Best used SUVs for less than £5000 (and the ones to avoid)

Noisy, slow, and crude to drive, the Jeep Cherokee also feels cheap inside, and has a catastrophic reputation for reliability.
