New BMW 530d and Jaguar XF 3.0 D

Our verdict

While the vast majority of BMW 5 Series buyers will be better off with the cheaper and more frugal 520d, this more powerful six-cylinder model is an absolute tour de force. It’s well worth considering if you’re buying privately and have a bit more cash, and although it’s harder to justify as a company car, it’s still cheaper than most similarly rapid diesel saloons. The Jaguar XF is great fun to drive, but a less convincing all-rounder.
