The hybrid BMW X5 has been revealed, and will make its public debut at the New York motor show next month.
The model, dubbed xDrive 40e, features a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine working in conjunction with a single electric motor, which is mounted within the car's eight-speed automatic transmission.
The engine develops 242bhp and 258lb ft, while the electric motor adds a further 111bhp and 184lb ft. Altogether, the hybrid X5 comes with a combined system output of 309bhp and 332lb ft. This gives it 55bhp more but 81lb ft less than the popular turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder common rail diesel powered X5 xDrive30d.
Because of the placement of the battery at the rear of the vehicle, boot space is reduced over the standard X5 by 150 litres, meaning there's 500 litres of storage space on offer.
The recharging time is put at 2 hours 48 minutes on an optional 3.5kW wallbox that operates at 16 amperes and 230 volts.
The new BMW offers three driving modes: Auto eDrive in which the electric motor supplements the petrol engine for maximum performance; Max eDrive which sees the X5 xDrive40e run exclusively on electric power; Save Battery which maintains the state of charge of the battery, possibly for later use in cities like London where electric vehicles are excluded from road charges.
BMW quotes a 0-62mph time of 6.8sec and a maximum speed that is limited to 131mph. By comparison, the X5 xDrive30d possesses respective figures of 6.8sec and 143mph. The electric range is put at 19 miles at a speed limited to 75mph.
The hybrid X5 offers combined fuel consumption of up to 85.6mpg, with CO2 emissions of 77g/km.
BMW says the new X5 has been given its own unqiue chassis tuning. Among the standard equipment is adaptive damping and a self levelling rear air suspension.
The driver can alter the chassis via a so-called Driving Experience Control function, which offers comfort, sport and eco-pro modes.
