This BMW Concept X4 will be the second SUV coupe in the company's line-up and will rival the likes of the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Cajun.
The Concept X4 has been revealed at the Shanghai motor show and points heavily to what the final production car will look like.
It is set to be a smaller version of the X6, so is likely to be a four-seat coupe that prioritises driving dynamics over practicality.
The show car reveals only the exterior of the car, with no hints on interior design or engine range.
It's the same length as the X3 SUV, but at 192cm wide and 162cm high it is both wider and lower. The wheelbase is the same as the X3's at 281cm.
This means it would be likely to have a similar engine range to the X3, with a selection of diesels. However, if BMW wants to keep the X4 as a performance coupe, it might well omit the fuel-efficient 18d unit.
A production version could therefore get the 184bhp 2.0-litre diesel, the 258bhp 3.0-litre diesel and the 313bhp 3.0-litre diesel from the X3.
It's too early for pricing details, but if the BMW follows the same pattern as the X5 and X6, then the X4 should cost a couple of thousand pounds more than the X3 meaning a starting price of around 34,000.
BMW has confirmed the X4 will go on sale in the UK in the first half of 2014.
