BYD has launched a new vehicle-to-grid EV charging bundle in partnership with UK energy provider Octopus Energy, which should essentially allow drivers to charge up their car for free.

The Power Pack Bundle, which has been labelled a ‘UK first’ by both companies, will allow customers to lease a BYD Dolphin electric car from just less than £300 per month, and receive a bi-directional Zaptec Pro charger and access to free home charging.

While you can lease a Dolphin for less through our leasing deals, and some rivals are even cheaper per month, the free charger and home charging are really the standout aspects of this bundle.

A typical EV driver will be able to save £620 a year thanks to the free home charging – which is achieved by feeding power back to the grid when the car doesn’t need it during peak hours when electricity is more expensive. It will then fully recharge the car during off-peak hours, when electricity is cheap and demand is low.

According to the two companies, drivers only need to “plug in overnight and let the tech do the rest”.

In order to qualify for the free charging, drivers must plug in their Dolphin at least 20 times per month for at least 12 hours at a time. They also must drive less than 12,000 miles per year, own a smart meter and have single-phase power at their property, which is generally standard in residential buildings.

The Power Pack Bundle is due to arrive later this year, but Octopus has already opened reservations on its website.
