Car of the Year Awards 2021: Best MPV for big families

For those who value space and versatility above style, MPVs make great buys. We’re looking for a car that’s pleasant to drive and spend time in, as well as good value and ruthlessly practical...

The Ford Galaxy is one of the biggest seven-seaters on the market, but you wouldn’t think that from the way it drives. It’s a natural and responsive steer, despite its heft, and that makes it extremely pleasant to handle. But even more importantly, the Galaxy is a great car in which to be a passenger.

The middle row of seats has space for three six-footers, each with their own individually sliding and reclining seat. Even the sixth and seventh seats, which fold up out of the flat boot floor, are roomy enough to allow adults to sit comfortably – something that can’t be said of alternatives such as the Citroën Grand C4 Space Tourer.

With 300 litres of boot space behind the third row, you’ve also got plenty of room for a buggy or a decent-sized shop even with all the seats occupied.

Of course, the Galaxy isn’t as desirable as many SUV alternatives. But for big families or anyone who rates space and practicality as their top priority, it’s a striking example of why the classic MPV is still king of the people-carriers.
