Car of the Year Awards 2022: Best estate car interior
While estates lack the fashionable status of SUVs, they’re more practical. But an estate also needs to be a pleasure to spend time in, and easy to live with beyond the simple virtue of space...
BMW 5 Series Touring 520d SE
It’s become fashionable for car makers to drop the word ‘estate’ in favour of variations on the Touring theme. BMW’s big, posh load-lugger has earned its claim to the T word, though – as travelling environments go, the BMW 5 Series Touring is close to peerless.
To sit in a 5 Series Touring is to wonder how things could get any better. The dashboard is uncannily easy to use, with well-placed controls and a very intuitive infotainment system. BMW’s rotary iDrive controller is far less distracting than the Audi A6 Avant’s fussy touchscreen. Quality is top-notch, too, and the seats provide support in all the right places.
You’ll want a good engine, and the 520d offers just that: its 2.0-litre diesel delivers impressive economy and more than enough power. While the A6 offers a smoother ride, the 5 Series is more rewarding to steer, so the journey is as enjoyable as reaching your destination.
