Car of the Year Awards 2022: Best family car interior
There are several types of family car, but here we’re looking at traditional hatchbacks: large enough to be practical, yet compact enough to be easy and enjoyable to drive...
BMW 1 Series 118i M Sport auto

When it comes to getting what you pay for in a premium hatchback, the interior of the BMW 1 Series shows how it should be done. The blend of form and function combines the use of plush materials with a logical placement for all the controls.
The 1 Series also feels more robust than the Mercedes-Benz A-Class, but the biggest advantage it has over its rivals is the infotainment system. This is far less distracting to use on the move than the set-ups in the Audi A3 and A-Class, because the central touchscreen is complemented by a tactile dial controller.

Factor in generous passenger space and a low level of wind noise on the motorway and it’s easy to see why the interior of the 1 Series shines brighter than the rest.
Our favourite model also brings punchy performance when combined with a smooth automatic gearbox, as well as agile handling.
