Car of the Year Awards 2022: Best plug-in hybrid for value
The best plug-in hybrid cars offer a long all-electric range, reducing fuel consumption, emissions and tax bills. Yet they must still drive well and not compromise on practicality...
Audi A3 Sportback 40 TFSIe Sport

You might not expect a car with a premium badge on its nose to be our go-to choice for value, but the Audi A3 40 TFSIe family hatchback is just that. For a start, it’s kind to your wallet because it can officially travel up to 40 miles without using a drop of fuel.
On top of that, its slow depreciation means you’ll get a large chunk of the initial purchase price back when you sell it. Plus, there’s more good news if you’re a company car driver: in entry-level Sport trim, this A3 is in one of the lowest benefit- in-kind tax brackets.

Don’t let the words ‘entry-level’ put you off; this version has enough kit to feel special, including 17in alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control and a part-leather interior. True, the Mercedes A-Class A250e has a longer official electric-only range, but the difference isn’t great enough to offset its higher price. Besides, the A3 is better to drive and just as classy inside.
