The new Ford Focus RS is due to go on sale in 2016 and is expected to cost less than Β£30,000.

It will feature an all-wheel-drive system and produce more than 316bhp, but it faces some tough competition from the other cars in its class.

One of its main rivals will be the Audi S3 Sportback, and we’ve found a saving of more than Β£3500 on it online.

For

The S3 is armed with a 296bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, a six-speed manual transmission and Audi’s four-wheel-drive quattro system, and it is seriously rapid.

However there’s far more to the S3 than its pace. True, it’ll cover 0-62mph in 5.2 seconds and deliver a fantastic roar from the engine whilst doing it, but it’s also a practical and versatile car that returns a claimed fuel economy of 40.4mpg.

It’s surprisingly comfortable, too, and remains composed over rough roads and bumps.

This Sportback version of the S3 also has the added practicality of having five doors.

Against

The S3 is a great car, but it’s not quite as exciting to drive as some of its rivals, like the BMW M135i.

Should I add any options?

A high-definition colour screen infotainment system, heated leather sports seats, a flat-bottomed leather-trimmed steering wheel, climate control, Bluetooth and a USB socket all come as standard in the generously equipped Audi.

There’s a big range of additional options available – adaptive cruise control costs Β£575, while front and rear parking sensors will set you back Β£595 – so it may be worth taking advantage of this saving by adding some luxuries, if your budget can stretch to it.
