This week we drove the new Volkswagen Golf SV and were impressed with the economical engine and quality interior. Its rival, the Ford C-Max, is today’s Deal of the Day.

The C-Max is one of the best-handling cars in its class and offers a spacious and economical alternative to conventional small family cars.

For

The steering on the C-Max makes easy work of low-speed manoeuvres but is accurate and quick at higher speeds. It’s an agile car that’s settled on the motorway and responsive around town.

There's a range of petrol and diesel engines available, but we'd go for the efficient 1.6-litre diesel as it has all the power needed, even with a fully loaded car. If you don't cover that many miles per year though, you may be better off with the 1.6-litre petrol.

With low running costs and Ford’s strong reliability record behind it, the C-Max is a great-value choice for a family car.

Against

There are some practicality issues, such as the rear seats. They can be tumbled forward or removed entirely, but they’re heavy to lift and leave a big step in the load area when folded.

The upper dashboard quality is below par, too. It’s made from dense, soft-touch plastics that make the C-Max’s interior feel cheaper than its rivals.

Should I add any options?

Our favourite trim level, Zetec, comes with alloy wheels, air-conditioning, Bluetooth, heated windscreen and digital radio.

Zetec should be all you need, but if you want even more then Titanium is the next trim up. It adds a Sony stereo, automatic headlights and wipers, climate control, keyless start and cruise control.

Top trim, Titanium X, comes with a glass roof, part-leather trim and a powered driver’s seat. However, both these trims increase the price considerably, so we’d recommend sticking with the generous Zetec.
