We were very impressed by Ford's latest hot hatch offering, the 1.0T Ecoboost 140 Zetec S Red Edition. It's great fun to drive, well equipped and promises decent fuel economy. The downsides? Other than the ridiculously long name, there's just one: the price. At nearly £16,000, it's £2000 more than a Suzuki Swift Sport and £700 more than the new Mini Cooper, which is a real shame.
The good news is that we've found a broker selling the Red Edition for £13,402, so it's now definitely worth a look if you're in the market for a hot hatch.
The Red Edition is seriously entertaining. A 0-62mph time of 9.0 seconds and power output of 138bhp might not sound that impressive but thanks to the great chassis and tuned steering, the Red Edition is a real blast. It strikes a great balance between the hardcore Fiesta ST and the rest of the Fiesta range.
Whatever speed you're going, you'll enjoy the smooth three-cylinder engine. It's fun whether you're pottering around town or thrashing it on a country road.
Like all Fiestas, the Red Edition offers a great driving position and a spacious cabin; there's more room than in either the Suzuki Swift Sport or the Mini Cooper.
Two of the complaints are ones that can be levelled at all Fiestas: the layout of the controls on the dashboard and the unintuitive nature of the infotainment system.
Some of the controls feel flimsy and they're set out in a way that takes some getting used to. The infotainment system isn't that user-friendly either, because of the number of menus there are to go through. The Mini Cooper definitely beats the Fiesta in this area.
Should I add any options?
It comes with air-conditioning, Bluetooth, front foglights, a heated windscreen and Ford’s Sync infotainment system, so we wouldn't bother adding more.
