For

There's plenty of quality competition in the small car category, but the Rio represents a good value choice.

The updated Rio has a face-lifted grille, new front and rear bumpers and redesigned front foglights to help give it a fresh look.

The engines remain the same and the 1.25-litre petrol is the pick of the bunch.

It has a spacious and stylish interior, and its five-door bodystyle adds to its practicality.

It comes with a seven-year warranty. The Rio is a reliable car anyway, but this gives buyers tremendous peace of mind.

Against

The Rio has a firm suspension and struggles with bumps and potholes.

Although good for town driving, the engine needs to be worked hard to make swift progress.

Should I add any options?

All Rios come with DAB radio, electric mirrors, hill-start assist, front electric windows, height-adjustable driver’s seat, folding rear seats and USB connectivity.

Our recommended trim is 2, which gets air-con, Bluetooth, a tyre-pressure monitoring system and electric folding door mirrors.

The only optional extras available are for metallic paints; you’ll need to up the trim level to get things such as the 7.0-inch touch-screen infotainment system with sat-nav and a reversing camera.
