The Renault Captur topped our list of most efficient SUVs in our true MPG test, but the Mercedes-Benz GLA finished a respectable third place with 56.6mpg.

We think it’s a worthy rival for the impressive Audi Q3, and with this discount the GLA undercuts the equivalent Q3 by more than Β£1000.

For

The economical engine may fall short of its claimed fuel economy of 62.8mpg, but our test proved that its capable of 56.6mpg in the real world and that puts the GLA near the top of its class in terms of fuel efficiency.

It’s a comfortable and refined cruiser that rides especially well in this SE trim with β€˜comfort’ suspension. A huge range of seat and steering wheel adjustments should let most drivers find a good driving position.

The GLA has a luxurious interior and is packed with safety features, too, winning a five star Euro NCAP safety rating in September. It remains in the running for our new safety award that names Britain's safest car.

Against

It’s on the pricey side, but this saving helps keep buying costs down and makes it cheaper than an equivalent Q3.

While there’s plenty of space in the front, room in the back is limited and offers only average head- and legroom.

Should I add any options?

Standard kit includes air-con, rain-sensing wipers, 18-inch alloys, Bluetooth, DAB radio and a 5.8-inch colour screen.

Pricey optional extras include parking sensors for Β£705 and heated seats for Β£300.
