The Peugeot 108 recently came second in our True MPG test of the cheapest cars to run on the market, losing out to the Dacia Sandero 1.5 dCi.

Being narrowly beaten by the notoriously cheap Sandero is nothing to be ashamed of though, and this deal brings the 108 – in well-equipped Active trim – to within Β£200 of the Sandero’s list price.

For

Low running costs are one of the 108's key skills; it achieved an impressive 54.6mpg in our True MPG test.

We’d avoid the entry-level Access spec and opt for the first-tier Active trim. It comes with a generous helping of equipment, including air-con, a colour touch-screen infotainment system, steering wheel mounted audio controls and a DAB radio.

Against

The interior looks and feels cheap in places, and you'll have to do without alloy wheels, as they are only available on pricier Allure-spec 108s and aren’t available as an optional extra on Active models.

The boot is neither large nor particularly practical with a high lip, low floor and large step with the seats folded. Rear head- and legroom is tight compared with rivals.

Should I add any options?

To keep the price down, we’d leave it as-is.
