The new Volkswagen Golf Estate is bigger and better than ever, standing at the top of the class alongside the Skoda Octavia Estate. The GTD and R versions of the Golf Estate may offer a more red-blooded driving experience, but the standard Golf Estate is a class leading all-rounder.

The massive 605-litre boot is a big step-up from the 380 litres on offer in the hatchback, and comes with a squared-off load bay with a low entry lip that makes it easy to load items in and out of.

The gutsy 148bhp 2.0-litre diesel engine is relaxing around town and is brilliant for longer journeys. It’s the best combination of price and power.

There’s very little to fault but if your main aim is to spend as little as possible, it may be worth considering the cheaper Skoda Octavia Estate because similar discounts are available.

Should I add any options?

SE trim comes equipped with items such as a 5.8in colour touchscreen and roof bars. There’s a raft of options available including sat-nav for a steep £750. If you’re planning to carry around seriously long items, then for £110 you can have a folding front seat.
