The Volkswagen Golf GTE is the third powertrain option in the Golf GTI line-up. As a plug-in hybrid it qualifies for the recently extended Β£5000 government grant, giving the healthy saving we found a considerable boost.

Its hybrid power doesn’t mean it’s a slouch. In fact, it manages a curt 7.6sec 0-62mph time, and a top speed of 135mph. A saving of Β£9246 means it won't break the bank either.

The lack of badging and hybrid powrtrain means it’s easy to forget it’s a Golf, but the sharp styling and benchmark-setting interior are a constant reminder you’re in the hugely popular Volkswagen model.

As part of the GTI range, the GTE provides smile-a-mile performance. The hybrid powertrain qualifies it for the Β£5000 government grant, and claimed figures of 31g/km and 166mpg are impressive. Take these with a pinch of salt in the real world, though.

The overall quality of the package, the seamless introduction of the hybrid system into the Golf range and its unique positioning as a hot hatch hybrid make the Golf GTE an enticing prospect.

Against

That said, the Golf hybrid isn’t perfect. Its weighs 155kg more than a standard GTI, so its handling doesn’t have quite the same dynamic edge as the petrol-only model.

That extra weight affects ride quality too; its noticeably harsher than the original GTI.

Should I add any options?

Navigation is standard on this Golf GTE, so we’d only change the standard black paintwork at a cost of between Β£260 and Β£960.

That extra weight is apparent on occasion too; the ride quality noticeably takes a hit compared to its GTI original.

Should I add any options?

Navigation is already fitted to this Golf GTE, and a change from the standard black paintwork costs between Β£260 and Β£960. We don’t think the GTE needs anything else though.
