Volkswagen had a busy Geneva motor show, revealing the Passat Alltrack and Touran, and the firm undoubtedly had one eye on the impressive-looking Honda Civic Type R.

The new front-wheel-drive powerhouse will rival Volkswagen’s own premier hot hatch - the Golf R. You'll have to wait a while before discounts become available on the hot Civic, but sizeable savings can be had right now on VW's 296bhp hatchback.

For

The Golf R is a seriously quick and exciting hatchback that covers 0-60mph in 5.1sec, and has a claimed fuel economy of 39.8mpg.

It’s an acceptable everyday proposition, thanks to five doors, a decent-sized boot.

Against

Few hot hatches come close to the Golf R, but the forthcoming Civic Type R will provide strong competition at a similar price.

Should I add any options?

The Golf R comes with sporty touches such as chrome door mirrors and gloss black door mirrors, as well as a 5.8in colour touchscreen, and there’s a host of options available. A leather interior with heated front seats costs an extra Β£1720, while a rear-view camera and keyless entry cost Β£165 and Β£360 respectively.
