For

The Golf SV is perfect for those who want a car that offers all the practicality of an MPV without compromising on the driving experience; it’s one of the best MPVs to drive.

The 2.0-litre diesel engine is strong, efficient and impressively smooth, and it also has a claimed fuel economy of 65.7mpg.

The Golf SV has a clear space advantage over standard family hatchbacks and offers substantial head- and legroom for tall adults in the front and rear seats.

The interior soft-touch plastics, nicely weighted controls on the dashboard and the user-friendly colour touch-screen infotainment system help give the Golf SV a premium feel.

Against

Although the Golf’s boot has an impressive capacity, the rear seats aren’t especially practical to operate. They can be slid forwards or folded flat, but can’t be dropped from the boot so you’ll have to stretch across the rear bench to operate them.

Should I add any options?

Air-con, a colour touch-screen, Bluetooth, digital radio and USB come as standard on all versions of the SV.

SE trim adds alloys, automatic lights and wipers, more storage cubbies and a leather steering wheel. It also comes with a city emergency braking system that automatically applies the brakes if it detects an imminent collision below 19mph.

There’s a wide choice of optional extras available. An electric sliding panoramic glass sunroof can be added for Β£930 - although this will reduce the amount of headroom available - and voice activation for audio and navigation comes at a cost of Β£185.

A rear-view camera costs Β£165 and could also be a worthwhile addition.
