Deal of the day: BMW 3 Series

The BMW 3 Series is for many the de facto junior executive model, and it's also one of our favourite cars in general.

It's up against some strong competition, including the Jaguar XE, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and our 2016 Car of the Year, the Audi A4. Thanks to today's deal, you can also save over £5000 on the 3 Series' list price.

Regardless of which engine you choose in the BMW 3 Series, you'll be getting a great car. The diesels make the most financial sense and are the most popular choices among UK buyers, and the 320d recommended here is one of the best options. If you can, opt for the eight-speed automatic gearbox, too.

The 3 Series is one of the best handing cars in this class, with the result being that it's an engaging driver's car as well as a comfortable motorway cruiser - a balancing act that's usually very hard to pull off.

Inside, you control most functions through BMW's iDrive infotainment system. Rest assured that this is one of the best offerings on the market: it looks great and is easy to control and use.

The steering weight is inconsistent in the 3 Series, which provides a slight damper on what is an otherwise great driving experience. Rear visibility is also hampered by the car's relatively large rear pillars.

There's nothing wrong with the BMW's cabin per se - it's actually rather well equipped and it's comfortable - but it's just not as luxurious and doesn't look as good as what you'll find in the Audi A4. There's room for two adults in the BMW's back seats, but fitting three people in will be a struggle.

Should I add any options?

As standard, you get a 6.5in infotainment display, but paying extra for the BMW Profession package gets you a larger 8.0in screen that's well worth the upgrade.

What are its rivals like?

This is one of the most competitive markets out there, and the BMW 3 Series has long been the benchmark car to beat. Until recently, it stood as the king of this class, but contenders such as the Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Jaguar XE have started to better it in some areas. It's also some way behind our What Car? Car of the Year, the Audi A4, when it comes to interior quality.
