Deal of the Day: BMW 5 Series

No large executive car does it better than the BMW 5 Series. We named it as our Large Executive Car of the Year for 2016 at the What Car? Awards, where it beat some stiff competition from the likes of the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi's A6.

BMW 5 Series models, and in particular this 530d version, can be close to the £40,000 mark, but today's deal knocks almost £8000 off the asking price.

You're not short of engine choices in the BMW 5 Series, but in truth it's rarely worthy straying from the entry-level diesels. The 530d recommended here is perfect for those seeking more performance than the lower 520d. It's effortlessly quick and just as rapid in the real world is some of the more powerful petrol models.

The 5 Series also offers one of the most impressive interiors in the class. All of the controls are within easy reach, and BMW's iDrive infotainment and navigation system is one of the best on the market. Material quality is also very good. There's plenty of space for front and rear passengers, but a little more storage space inside wouldn't go amiss.

On standard suspension, the 5 Series is fine around town but can feel sluggish and wallowy along country roads. If you don't opt for stiffer suspension, the body leans through corners, making the 5 Series feel less agile than its rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz.

Also, be aware that if you go for a manual gearbox, the pedals will be offset to one side. BMW's reliability record is also poor historically, and that's worth considering before you meet the high purchase price.

Should I add any options?
Variable Damper Contropl (VDC) turns an already great ride into an excellent one, so it's a must if comfort is your top priority

What are its rivals like?
The Mercedes-Benz CLS was also one of the top performers at the most recent What Car? Awards, although it majors on style rather than practicality. One of the big sellers in this market is the Audi A6, and it's easy to see why – it's refined and spacious and represents good value for money.
