The new BMW M4 Convertible has a twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine that delivers 431bhp to the rear wheels via an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.

With the DCT twin-clutch automatic gearbox in situ, the M4 will dash from 0 to 62mph in 4.4 seconds and hit its 155mph limiter not long afterwards. All of this is accompanied by loud bellowing from the exhausts and crackles on gearchanges.

Standard equipment is generous, with satellite-navigation, Bluetooth, DAB radio, parking sensors, leather upholstery and heated front seats included. It'll also do an average of 34.0mpg and emits 194g/km of CO2, which is impressive considering the performance available.

It’s more expensive than the M4 and M3, and it isn't as good to drive as either sibling, mainly because it can't deal with bumps as well as either. Scarred road surfaces send shudders into the Convertible’s cabin, too.

The two rear seats are a bit cramped for anyone 6ft tall or over. Shoulder- and legroom are a bit limited, as is headroom with the roof closed. Fitting the wind deflector also means you effectively cannot use the rear seats.

Should I add any options?
As mentioned, almost everything is included so we’d avoid increasing the price any further.

However, for die-hard fans of al fresco motoring, you can specify extra vents in the headrests to blow warm air onto your neck.
