The prices and specifications for the Mazda 2 are now available on our website. The fuel-efficient Ford Fiesta rival is set to go on sale in early 2015.

Our digital editor, Nigel Donnelly, has been running Mazda’s bigger hatchback, the Mazda 3, for almost a year now and we’ve found more than £2800 off the model he's running.

The 3 looks sleek on the outside, and it's very comfortable on the inside thanks to its wide range of seat and steering wheel adjustments that caters for drivers of all shapes and sizes.

There’s generous head- and legroom for passengers in the front and the back, enhancing the 3’s credentials as a practical family hatchback, and the boot is a similar size to that in the Seat Leon. The rear seats are easily folded flat to increase the load capacity further.

The infotainment system is easy to operate and includes a seven-inch colour touch-screen that sits on top of the dashboard.

Running costs are low, too. Mazda’s Skyactiv technology includes an engine stop/start system that helps to give the 3 a claimed fuel economy figure of 55.4mpg.

The 3 falls short of its class-leading rivals for refinement. There’s too much engine noise when accelerating hard, and road and wind noise becomes very noticeable at motorway speeds.

Should I add any options?

16-inch alloys, air-con, Bluetooth, two USB sockets, steering wheel-mounted stereo controls and sat-nav all come as standard with SE Nav trim.

Paint options are the only extras you can add onto the 3; Nigel's has the £660 metallic paint option.

What next?

Head to then select ‘Seat’ and ‘3 hatchback’ from the drop-down menus to see the full range of deals available.
