The beautifully built Mercedes S-Class is the What Car? 2014 Luxury Car of the Year, so it’s no surprise that the model sets the benchmark by which others are measured.
Despite being the smallest engine in the range, the S350’s 3.0-litre V6 is one of the best diesel engines available. On the move it is always silky-smooth, delivers plenty of pace and returns an average of 50.4mpg.
In long-wheelbase form the S-Class offers enough space in the back for the tallest of VIPs, while the driver will enjoy a good chassis set-up and nicely weighted steering. Qualities that all of the occupants can revel in include the supple air-sprung ride, silent cruising ability and the vast array of high-tech gadgets.
Other than the price and the fact that much of the ‘must have’ kit forms part of a lengthy and expensive options portfolio, there is little to criticise the S-Class for.
Should I add any options?
Although there is plenty of the standard kit, the simple answer is yes.
Start by defining the layout of the rear seats, which can be configured as a standard three-person bench arrangement or two-person set-up with rear-screens and individually adjustable aircraft-style chairs.
‘Hot stone’ massage seats, a night vision display, a 24-speaker sound system and a Driver Assist Package, which includes the Stop and Go Pilot option that steers, accelerates and brakes the car automatically while in traffic, are some of the highlights to choose from.
