Deal of the Day: Seat Leon ST

The Seat Leon ST is a capable estate, and this particular spec model featured recently near the top of our list of the most economical estates on sale.

The sizeable saving online comes on top of an already competitive list price, especially with the pick-of-the-bunch 1.6 TDI engine.

The Seat's real-world economy of 61.5mpg was second only to the Honda Civic Tourer in our recent assessment of its segment, meaning it offers cheap running costs in addition to its remarkable discount.

One of the car's strengths is its safety, with seven airbags and a host of safety tech as standard and a five-star NCAP crash test rating, while rear side airbags are a £300 option. The car also has an 'excellent' security rating from Thatcham.

Shared underpinnings with the Audi A3 and Volkswagen Golf place the model in good stead for handling and body control, and the 1.6 diesel doesn't need to be worked hard to be rewarding.

As the VW Group's more dynamic arm, the Seat's ride is harsher compared to those of its rivals, meaning comfort is not its strong point. Avoid opting for larger alloys if comfort is high on your list of priorities.

A slightly smaller boot space than rivals with a fiddly floor adjustment pitches the Leon behind the more practical frontrunners in the class. The seats do fold flat, though, so the Leon ST is at least a competent load-lugger.

Should I add any options?

Adding the Media System Plus - a £405 option - allows you to control your MP3 player via the dash-mounted touchscreen. Sat-nav is a costly extra at £930, but the system is intuitive and easy to use.

Spending another £80 on Seat's Storage Pack adds cubbyholes and storage boxes for extra practicality, and the £270 rear parking sensors may come in handy given the Leon's thick rear pillars.

Standard kit for the SE is fairly generous, though, with 16in alloy wheels, driver's seat lumbar adjustment, a leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio and phone controls, and cruise control.
