The Skoda Fabia was crowned What Car? Car of the Year for 2015. It also won our Small Car category.

We’ve managed to find savings of more than £2300 off the cost of a new one.

The functional, frugal and competitively priced Fabia is a truly exceptional hatchback that deserves its 2015 Car of the Year crown.

The 89bhp petrol engine is our pick of the range. It emits 107g/km of CO2, has a claimed fuel economy of 60.1mpg, rarely feels short of power and has plenty of shove to help make swift progress.

Few others in its class offer as much space as the Fabia – the 330-litre boot is a practical shape that offers more space than that of a Ford Fiesta or Volkswagen Polo. The list price for this 1.2 TSI 90 SE undercuts both the Fiesta and the Polo.

Wind noise from around the windscreen pillars and the door mirrors is an issue.

The Fiesta handles better than the Fabia, but the Skoda's handling is still safe and predictable through tight corners.

Should I add any options?

SE trim already comes with Bluetooth, DAB radio, USB, central locking, electrically adjustable door mirrors, air-con, alloys, rear parking sensors, an upgraded stereo and leather-covered steering wheel.

It also brings with it a 6.5in touchscreen that’s easy to operate and has crystal clear graphics.

No extras are essential, but cruise control can be added for £180 and a system that detects driver fatigue costs just £50 to add. Keyless entry and start is an extra £320.
