Our True MPG testers recently compiled a list of the most economical 4x4 cars on the market, and the Skoda Octavia Scout took second place, being pipped by the dinky Fiat Panda 4x4.

The whopping £5180 saving we found on autoebid.com brings the Octavia Scout down to just £20,225 – the same price as a low-end Volkswagen Golf estate.

For

The ultra-low running costs of the Octavia Scout betray its all-wheel drive powertrain, making it the cheapest-to-run 4x4 this side of the Fiat Panda 4x4.

What makes the low running costs even more surprising is the punchy engine. The 2.0 TDI unit, combined with all-wheel drive, makes the Octavia Scout a fiercely capable 4x4.

Being a Skoda, the fit and finish of the interior is among its list of key attributes, being as solidly put together as you could ask for.

Against

The practicality of the boot is slightly lessened by the step in the floor of the load area, but the cavernous space is useful nonetheless.

Another niggle holding the Octavia back is the diesel engine, which, despite its pulling power, is one of the more unrefined powerplants across the range.

Should I add any options?

The options available could make your perfect Octavia Scout a pricy prospect, but would surely eat up the saving. It's well equipped as it is, though.
