Electric Car Awards 2022: Best used electric small SUV

With electrified cars now coming in all shapes and sizes – and available to suit every budget – we’ve named the best models in every class. Here we look at the best used electric small SUV...

If you're on a tight budget, buying an electric SUV might seem like a ‘when pigs fly’ scenario. However, consider the MG ZS EV. It’s a fully electric SUV that can be bought secondhand for the price of a new Ford Fiesta hatchback.

You’ll need as little as £19,500 to get behind the wheel of a ZS EV, this for a two-year-old example with less than 30,000 miles on the clock. Even more temptingly, a year-old car can be had for only a couple of thousand pounds more. That’s seriously cheap, considering how much car you get for your money.

You see, this affordability doesn’t come at the expense of equipment. Quite the opposite, in fact. Entry-level Excite models get 17in alloy wheels, rear parking sensors and an 8.0in infotainment screen with phone mirroring, plus important safety aids that include automatic emergency braking and lane-keeping assistance. Go for a higher-spec Exclusive and you’ll be treated to a panoramic glass roof and leather seats.

Nor is there a catch when it comes to quality; the interior looks and feels surprisingly classy, considering the car’s price. In addition, the ZS EV offers plenty of room for occupants and luggage.

A 141bhp electric motor allows the electric ZS to accelerate from 0-62mph quicker than the petrol versions, but it’s only so-so to drive and its ride can be a bit bouncy. Range is modest in the 45kWh standard model (163 miles officially), making it best suited to shorter journeys, but if you’re willing to up your budget, you can also get a newer Long Range version that can cover a more useful 273 miles between charges.

That’s still not as far as the Kia e-Niro and Hyundai Kona Electric can go, but ultimately neither can match the ZS EV’s fantastic value.
