Electric Infiniti sportscar for Geneva

Infiniti has released teaser pictures of a range-extending electric concept car that will be unveiled at the Geneva motor show in March.

Andy Palmer, executive vice-president of Infiniti said: 'At the Geneva show next year, we will present our vision for a totally new kind of inspired premium performance car.

'Infiniti already has hybrid and clean diesel models on sale. With an all-electric sedan on the way, the natural next step was to push the boundaries where performance and the environment intersect.'

There are no performance or economy figures yet, but Infiniti will have the Fisker Karma as a benchmark. Like the Infiniti, the Karma is an electric sports car with range-extending technology. Fisker announced earlier this week that the Karma had average fuel economy of 135mpg and CO2 emissions of 51g/km.

There's no word yet on if, or when, the Infiniti sports car would go on sale.

So far, Infiniti has confirmed that a new G Series compact executive car will go on sale in 2013. It'll be a rival for the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series, but will be slightly larger than both.

Four-cylinder diesel engines will be added to the M Series executive saloon, also in 2013. In 2014, Infiniti will launch an all-new small saloon powered by an electric motor. It'll share its technology with the Nissan Leaf, but will have entirely different interior and exterior styling.

The major sales push will come from what Infiniti insiders call its 'A3 fighter' a new compact model that will be a rival for the Audi A3 and BMW 1 Series. It will be launched in 2015, and its styling will be heavily influenced by the Etherea concept car that made its debut at the Geneva motor show in 2011, and will share its basic platform and engines with the new Mercedes B-Class.
