We like the Giulia's engaging handling and the strong performance of its engines, but rivals are more practical and have nicer interiors.

There isn't much in the way of usable luggage space on board, but we reckon you'll be having too much fun to care about that.

Its interior quality could be better, and the infotainment system is fiddly, but the A3 is a solid all-rounder in the family car market.

The Bentley Bentayga strikes a great&nbsp;compromise for a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/luxury-suv">luxury SUV</a>, balancing the performance of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/aston-martin/dbx/estate/review/n21787">Aston Martin DBX</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/lamborghini/urus/estate/review/n17868">Lamborghini Urus</a> with superb refinement. The Bentayga isn't just a strong performer; its interior is beautifully appointed, featuring&nbsp;wood veneers and aluminium air vents. The&nbsp;infotainment system is also quite impressive, with pin-sharp graphics and rapid responses to input. Only the high purchase and running costs – the Bentayga V8 has an official fuel economy figure of slightly more than 21mpg – plus the laggy automatic gearbox, let the side down.

Few luxury SUVs are as well-rounded as the BMW X5 – in fact, it's our reigning <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/car-of-the-year-awards-2022-luxury-suv-of-the-year/n23985">Luxury SUV of the Year</a>. Its lavish interior and superb infotainment system offer a sense of quality and occasion, and there’s plenty of room for five inside. The xDrive45e plug-in hybrid version is our pick of the range thanks to its impressive 45-mile electric-only range, meaning many people can commute without spilling a drop of petrol, and company car drivers can save a good amount on benefit-in-kind (<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/advice/owning/company-car-tax-guide/n9352">BIK</a>) tax.

The Bugatti Chiron isn’t really a conventional <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/sports">sports car</a> so much as&nbsp;a test of the limits of modern engineering. It uses an 8.0-litre 16-cylinder engine developing a monstrous&nbsp;1487bhp – more than 10 times the amount produced by&nbsp;most&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/family">family cars</a>’ engines –&nbsp;which allows it to dispatch 0-60mph in 2.5sec, eventually reaching a top speed of 261mph. Inside, the Chiron is beautifully appointed, and does without digital dials or a modern infotainment which could date it in decades to come. It’s truly the stuff of dreams – and at around £2.5m, that’s exactly where it’ll remain for all but a select few.

If it wasn’t for the Caterham Seven’s LED headlights and brake lights, it could easily be mistaken for something from the 1950s. That’s because it’s remained largely the same since it first appeared as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/lotus">Lotus</a> Seven in 1957. That means the Caterham is a sharp-steering, uncompromising sports car that feels&nbsp;like little else, but also that it lacks any semblance of comfort, practicality, or refinement – you don’t even get a windscreen as standard.

The latest&nbsp;Citroën C4 successfully reinvented the stodgy model as a trendy <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/coupe-suv">coupé SUV</a> with a cosseting ride and good refinement. It’s also quite cheap for a car of its size, and doesn’t cost much to run in either petrol or diesel form. Its practicality is compromised by the rakish roofline, though;&nbsp;rear leg room is limited, and the boot can store fewer carry-on suitcases than some <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/small-suv">small SUV</a>s.

The Cupra Formentor takes the underpinnings from the fun to drive, practical <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/seat/ateca/estate/review/n111">Seat Ateca</a> and repackages them in a trendy coupé body with a smarter interior. That means the Formentor feels more upmarket than the Ateca, while it doesn’t trade away too much practicality for its rakish roofline. Opt for our preferred 1.5 TSI V1 version and you’ll have a trendy&nbsp;SUV that’s neither a slouch nor unreasonably expensive.

Model Sandero | List price from £12,295 | Target Price from £12,295 | What Car? rating 4/5

The Dacia Sandero was formerly&nbsp;the UK's cheapest new car, underpinned by old Renault components. But don't think that means it's a poor option; it’s one of the most practical small cars on sale, with a massive boot and plenty of room for six-footers. It’s also predicted to depreciate less harshly than most small cars, and the 1.0-litre TCe 100 Bi-Fuel engine has the ability to run on petrol or cheap liquid petroleum gas (LPG), where it’s available. Only a disappointing Euro NCAP safety rating of two out of five stars lets it side down.

The DS 4’s interior is laden with high-rent materials on a par with those in the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/a3/hatchback/review/n77">Audi A3</a> and BMW 1 Series, but with a design that provides a much greater sense of occasion. The DS 4’s touchscreen infotainment system also lives up to the car’s premium billing; responding quickly to your prods and swipes, with an intuitive, smartphone-like layout. It’s not as fun to drive as its rivals, though, with a jelly-like ride that’s aggravated by the slightest undulations in the road.

Model 812 Superfast |&nbsp;What Car? rating 4/5

Most of us won’t ever drive a Ferrari 812 Superfast, let alone own one, but the lucky few who can afford its six-figure price tag are in for a treat. The Superfast’s colossal engine and pin-sharp handling makes it one of the most thrilling drives available, while its spacious interior seats two in comfort. However, it’s not the most comfortable sports car of its ilk – making long-distance touring difficult – and its interior isn’t as luxurious as those in rivals from <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/aston-martin">Aston Martin</a> and<a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/mclaren"> McLaren</a>.

Model 500 (electric) | List price from £23,835 | Target Price from £23,547 | What Car? rating 4/5

The electric Fiat 500 brings the stalwart model up to date with a zippy 117bhp electric motor, while maintaining its cutesy looks. It’s a great choice for nipping around town thanks to its small size and the instant acceleration provided by its electric motor, and the 500 costs much less than most rivals. You probably won't want to take it on the motorway too often, though; wind noise is abundant, and the 199-mile range (with the larger 42kWh battery) is quite restrictive.

If you’re looking for a small SUV that can put a smile on your face, the Ford Puma is the best of the bunch. Its engines all feel punchy off the mark, and the Puma handles with deft agility through bends. Yet it’s also quite a sensible buy, thanks to low CO2 emissions and excellent real-world fuel economy, contributing to its three-year reign as our <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/car-of-the-year-awards-2022-small-suv-of-the-year/n24002">Small SUV of the Year</a>.

Think of the Genesis GV60 as a posher version of the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/hyundai/ioniq-5/hatchback/review/n22944">Hyundai Ioniq 5</a> and the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/ev6/estate/review/n23462">Kia EV6</a>, featuring an interior that feels particularly special. As with the EV6 and Ioniq 5, the GV60 is cavernous inside, with a big boot and plenty of rear leg room. The GV60 is also the most powerful car of the bunch, delivering up to 483bhp in Boost mode and dispatching the 0-60mph sprint in 4.0sec – on a par with the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/taycan/saloon/review/n20184">Porsche Taycan</a>.

The 2022 <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/car-of-the-year-awards-2022-small-car-of-the-year/n23976">What Car? Small Car of the Year</a>, the Honda Jazz, is one of the easiest small cars to live with. Its unique seating layout – which allows you to fold down the rear seat bases like&nbsp;a cinema chair – makes it incredibly practical, while its hybrid engine keeps running costs low. It might not set the world alight in the performance stakes, nor cosset you like a luxury car, but the Jazz is otherwise a fantastic car for the money.

If you’d like a spacious <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/family-suv">family SUV</a> then the Hyundai Tucson deserves a place on your shopping list. Inside, it offers more than enough space for four adults, and seven carry-on suitcases in the boot. It’s also quite well-finished inside with soft-touch plastics where it counts, and decent build quality. You should also consider the cheaper <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/kia/sportage/4x4/review/n17352">Kia Sportage</a>, with which the Tuscon shares its underpinnings.

The Jaguar F-Pace is neither the most practical nor the most comfortable <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/large-suv">large SUV</a>, but if you want something with a sporty character, it’s worth considering. Its agility through bends is comparable with the stellar <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/porsche/macan/4x4/review/n52">Porsche Macan</a> while the driving position is comfortable and provides decent visibility. However, as with sister brand <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/land-rover">Land Rover</a>, Jaguar’s reliability record isn’t very good.

Unless you need a small SUV with off-road credentials, the Jeep Renegade is best avoided. It costs more than most of its rivals, yet feels sluggish unless you pick the range-topping Trailhawk model, and the ride is very harsh. Inside, it’s laden with scratchy plastics and rearward visibility is limited. It does hold onto its value better than most rivals, though.

It isn’t just the Kia Sportage’s unusual styling that separates it from the crowd, because it’s also a fantastic all-rounder. Stick to the lower trim levels to get the most for your money.

If there’s one thing the Lamborghini Urus isn’t, it’s sensible – but which Lamborghini ever was? The Urus blends staggering straight-line pace and sharp handling with surprising ride comfort, making it a compelling alternative to a more traditional sports car. However, at £117,417, it’s ludicrously expensive, and an average real-world economy of around 20mpg means it’s costly to keep fuelled, too.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Owning a Range Rover Evoque is a sound financial decision. That’s because it’s not the most expensive premium family SUV, yet it’s predicted to hold onto more of its value over three years than the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q3/4x4/review/n43">Audi Q3</a> and <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volvo/xc40/estate/review/n119">Volvo XC40</a>. It’s also good to drive and plush inside, with lots of luxury and safety technology as standard. Although Land Rover’s reliability record isn’t very good – 29th of 30 brands in the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/2021-what-car-reliability-survey-brands/n23418">2021 What Car? Reliability Survey</a> – you do get a three-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.&nbsp;

Even the entry-level NX 350h regular hybrid is worth a look if you can’t conveniently plug your car in, and all versions offer a high driving position plus an upmarket, well-built interior.&nbsp;

If you’d like a sports car&nbsp;that's uncompromising in its delivery of an engaging&nbsp;driving experience, the Lotus Elise is the car to pick. It’s incredibly lightweight, meaning it can out-accelerate the Alpine A110 despite having less power, while also offering superlative grip through corners. Just bear in mind that it’s neither comfortable nor practical – you don’t even get air conditioning as standard.

The Maserati Levante is spacious inside and well-equipped, as you’d expect from a luxury SUV, but it falls flat in many other regards. Its petrol engines are lethargic at low revs, and you can feel the Levante’s heavy weight through corners; making it much less enjoyable to drive than the Porsche Macan. High rates of depreciation mean the Levante’s also unkind to your wallet in the long-term.

With the McLaren 720S, the British brand has produced a savagely fast sports car that’s also surprisingly driver-friendly, thanks to its comfortable ride, great rearward visibility and decent practicality. If you’re looking for a premium-feeling family SUV, few are as competent as the Mercedes GLA. Inside it’s reminiscent of the £40,000 <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/mercedes-benz/e-class/saloon/review/n17174">Mercedes E-Class</a> luxury car, and similarly spacious as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/audi/q3/4x4/review/n43">Audi Q3</a>. You also get a good amount of luxury and safety technology, including a system which prevents you from drifting out of your lane. The MG ZS is a great value proposition; it’s the second-cheapest family SUV on sale, and for you money you get a&nbsp;roomy interior,&nbsp;decent handling, and a seven-year warranty. Nonetheless, it&nbsp;falls short of its key rival, the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/dacia/duster/estate/review/n67">Dacia Duster</a>, which is cheaper and more comfortable.

Few cars – let alone small cars – have an interior which can match the Mini for build quality and style, which is why we recognised it as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/news/car-of-the-year-awards-2022-best-small-car-interior/n24011">Best Small Car Interior</a> in the 2022 What Car? Awards. The Mini’s also quite fun to drive and holds onto its value well, but it’s let down by its limited practicality; you can only have it with four seats in three-door form.

Model Outlander |&nbsp;What Car? rating 2/5

The Mitsubishi Outlander offers good practicality, with seven seats and a big boot, at a low cost. However, there's little else to redeem it; it's dull inside, and the engines offer performance on a par with city cars such as the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/volkswagen/up/hatchback/review/n9">Volkswagen Up</a>, while sounding coarse when wrung out – which you’ll need to do often if the motorway features in your commute.

Model Qashqai | List price from £25,505 | Target Price from £25,505 | What Car? rating 4/5

The original Nissan Qashqai popularised the affordable <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/family-suv">family SUV</a>, and the current version is a solid successor;&nbsp;offering great safety credentials and a high driving position at a competitive price. The Qashqai also rides quite comfortably and does a good job of sealing out noise, but it doesn’t offer an engaging drive. Its seating isn’t very flexible, either.

The Peugeot 208 is one of the most plush small cars available thanks to its impressive ride comfort and its striking, well-built interior. Its engines are also rather&nbsp;punchy, with the 99bhp PureTech 100 providing the best compromise between pace and expense. However, the 208 isn’t perfect:&nbsp;it’s not much fun to drive, and the strangely small steering wheel can make it hard for some people to see the instruments.

On price alone, the Polestar 2 is well placed to rival the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/tesla/model-3/saloon/review/n19010">Tesla Model 3</a>. The 2’s classy interior and rapid performance (in dual-motor specification) make it competitive at face value, but it falls short elsewhere. It's much more cramped at the rear than in the Model 3, nor is the&nbsp;2 as good at sealing out wind noise.

If you’d like a car that can haul the whole family in comfort, but also entertain on a country lane, the Porsche Macan is a great choice. When equipped with air suspension it can go from a plush cruiser to a backroad bruiser at the flick of a switch. Inside, the Macan is as luxurious as you’d expect a <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/porsche">Porsche</a> to be, and the driver’s seat is highly adjustable so as to emulate either a low-down sports car or a jacked-up SUV, to your preference.

The Renault Captur’s low entry price makes it one of the cheaper <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/category/small-suv">small SUVs</a> on the market, but by the time you’ve chosen an engine with enough verve and a trim level that suits your needs, it looks like much less of a bargain. It is slightly redeemed by its good safety rating, and its&nbsp;folding rear seat bench&nbsp;that can be used to improve boot space, though.

If you’ve just won the lottery and want to experience the epitome of luxury, the Rolls-Royce Cullinan deserves a place on your shopping list. The Cullinan is superbly refined – to the point that the engine isn’t always audible when idling – and&nbsp; opulent inside, thanks to a mix of an intuitive <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/make/bmw">BMW</a> infotainment system, wooden panels, and soft leather. Of course, the Cullinan is also&nbsp;hugely expensive to buy and run, keeping it off the driveways of everyone but a select, lucky few.

The Seat Ateca was the Spanish brand’s first attempt at making an SUV, and it was&nbsp;rather competent. Few family SUVs are as fun to drive as the Ateca, nor are they as spacious or competitively-priced. The Ateca’s good handling does come at a cost to ride comfort, though, so we’d stick to the lower trim levels with smaller wheels that better mitigate the disturbance caused by potholes.

The Skoda Enyaq is impressively practical, comfortable, and&nbsp;cheaper than most electric SUVs. Stick to the 60 version that’s officially capable of 256 miles between recharges for the best value for money, or opt for the 333-mile 80 if you regularly drive long distances.&nbsp;

Very few cars come close to the manoeuvrability of the electric Smart EQ Fortwo thanks to its dinky dimensions that allow you to scoot through gaps in traffic and even park nose-to-kerb. However, the Fortwo EQ is only&nbsp;capable of driving up to 81 miles between recharges, and isn’t very refined at motorway speeds;&nbsp;effectively limiting it to town use.

If you love&nbsp;a good bargain, the Ssangyong Korando might be the car for you. It’s one of the cheapest family SUVs on sale and offers great practicality – with a bigger boot than you’ll find in the <a href="https://www.whatcar.com/skoda/karoq/estate/review/n118">Skoda Karoq</a> – plus a solid list of safety equipment. However, the Korando’s engines aren’t very fuel efficient, and feel rather lethargic on the motorway.
