What is it?
The C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso are two of our favourite MPVs. Both feature the kind of easy practicality and larger interior volume which buyers in this market love. They're also stylish - not something you can say about most MPV models.
For 2016, Citroën has given both cars a mid-life update, which brings new petrol engine options, new safety and assistance technology and some minor styling tweaks. In terms of design, both models get new lighting designs and a modified front bumper, while the five-seat C4 Picasso also gets larger 17in alloy wheels.
It's worth mentioning that the exterior and interior dimensions of both cars hasn't changed, meaning the amount of storage space inside both cars is the same as before. That's no bad thing, because these are two of the cleverest MPVs around.
In five-seat form, the C4 Picasso can take a family-size complement of luggage in its boot without too much trouble, and in seven-seat Grand C4 Picasso guise there's a vast amount of space on offer. The seats in both models can slide forwards and fold flat, too.
What engines can I choose from?
Both cars get the option of a new PureTech 130 petrol engine which is claimed to emit 115g/km of CO2, and the C4 Picasso also receives a Puretech 110 - which already appears elsewhere in the Citroën range. Both engines are likely to be small sellers, though, as most buyers in this market prefer diesels. We'd recommend 1.6-litre diesel engines for both the C4 Picasso and the Grand C4 Picasso, as they give the best blend of power and fuel economy.
As before, drivers can choose from a six-speed manual, a semi-automatic or six-speed automatic gearbox.
What equipment does it come with?
Both cars come in three trim levels - Touch Edition, Feel and Flair. Citroën already offers convenience technology like keyless entry and start, automatic lights and a 360-degree parking camera for the C4 Picasso, but as part of this facelift it's adding a driver monitoring system (which can suggest drivers take a break if it detects erratic inputs at the wheel), adaptive cruise control and Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB). AEB is crucial safety technology which can save lives, so it's one option box we'd suggest you tick.
While the Citroën's infotainment setup is broadly the same as before - comprising a large digital driver's display in the middle of the dashboard and a 7.0in touchscreen below - there are new features here including the ability to pair your smartphone using apps like Apple CarPlay, and the ability to use smatphone-style touch controls with the sat-nav system.
How much does it cost?
Citroën says that prices for the C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso will start from £19,635 and £21,935 respectively - an increase on the price of today's models, which start from £18,495 and £20,195. At their new price points, the C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso will still be competitive against key rivals in this market.
How good are its rivals?
Rivals for the new C4 Picasso and Grand C4 Picasso include all of the UK's staple MPVs, but in particular the five-seat Volkswagen Golf SV and seven-seat Ford S-Max. Both are well regarded MPVs, but both are also more expensive to buy than these Citroën equivalents.
