Widely considered to be the first ever multi-purpose vehicle (MPV), the 1950s Fiat 600 Multipla combined compact proportions with everyday usability, and it’s now been reimagined for the modern era: meet the Fiat Multiplina concept.
As the name suggests, the Multiplina concept has been conceived as a smaller version of the 600 Multipla, drawing on some of its key styling elements including a ‘one-box’ body, forward-positioned flat front windscreen and rounded headlights. It acts as the big brother to the current Fiat Topolino (pictured below), a two-seat electric quadricycle based on the Citroën Ami. The above image of the Multiplina was shown in a presentation by Fiat, and enhanced by What Car?.
Inside the Multiplina, there’s room for four occupants, and Fiat has described it as using “space-maximising architecture”. Official technical figures are still thin on the ground, but the Multiplina has a top speed of 55mph, almost double the 28mph maximum speed of the Topolino and Ami. That means, unlike its smaller siblings, the Multiplina won’t fall under the regulations that allow for some European drivers aged 14 or over with a light quadricycle licence to drive it.

While battery capacity and range figures have yet to be revealed, Fiat claims the Multiplina has an ‘extended range’ within the quadricycle category. It’s likely it’ll represent a significant improvement over the official 46-mile range of the Topolino, which uses a dinky 5.5kWh battery alongside an 8bhp electric motor.
The Multiplina was teased as part of Fiat’s wider strategy at parent company Stellantis’s annual investor day presentation in May, alongside two new SUVs called the Fiat Grizzly (a conventional SUV and a rakish coupé-SUV), and a new electric city car inspired by the original Panda hatchback.
A production version of the Multiplina will likely arrive over the coming years. Prices are a long way from being revealed but, for reference, the two-seat Topolino currently starts at £8995.
