Ford Focus becomes top-selling used car

The Ford Focus was the biggest-selling used car in 2012, knocking the Ford Fiesta off the top spot a position it had held since 2007.

Figures from data experts Experian show that Focus sales rose 4.5% during 2012, beating the Ford Fiesta and Vauxhall Corsa, which both increased by 1% over the same period.

Despite this growth, used car sales fell in 2012 when compared with 2011. Overall, 6,743,080 cars were sold - a 0.4% fall from the 6,768,759 sold the year before.

The largest growth in used sales was in the SUV segment, though, where an increase of 5.2% was recorded in 2012 compared with 2011.

The most popular used SUV was the Land Rover Freelander, whose sales increased by 4.5%.

For the first time since 2005, used MPV sales fell recording a drop of 1.1%.

Outside the traditional segments, there was a dramatic increase in sales of hybrid vehicles. Sales were up 47% in 2012, with the Toyota Prius claiming a 35.7% increase.
