Geneva motor show: Morgan Plus E
* Morgan Plus E electric sports car * Five-speed manual transmission * Production version possible...
Morgan has unveiled its new electric concept car with manual transmission at this years Geneva motor show.
The Plus E concept car was created to test market reaction; if the response is positive, a production version could follow.
The car comes with a five-speed manual transmission, which Morgan says has been designed to deliver substantial torque instantly at any speed.
Based on the new BMW V8-powered Plus 8, also launched at the Geneva show, the Plus E concept car has an aluminium platform. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 70kw (94bhp) electric motor.
Morgan says that by retaining a clutch, the motor can spend more time operating in its sweet spot; the clutch can be left engaged while stationary and pulling away, like a conventional automatic.
Two Plus E concepts models are likely: one as an engineering assessment, the other a near-production version with alternative battery technology and sequential gearbox.
Steve Morris, Morgans operations director, said: The project is aimed at delivering as much driving pleasure as possible in a zero-emissions vehicle.'
