Italian car designer killed

Andrea Pininfarina, boss of the famous Italian car design house, has been killed in a road accident. He was 51.

He was hit by a car yesterday when riding a scooter in Turin.

His company Pininfarina, has designed cars for Ferrari and Maserati and helped Ford designing its Ford Focus Coupe Cabriolet and Mitsubishi with its Colt CC. Other clients include Fiat, Volvo, Alfa Romeo and Cadillac.

The firm started in 1930 by Mr Pininfarina's grandfather.

Andrea Pininfarina took over as chief executive of the family firm in 2001, and in 2006 also became chairman of the board of directors.

'Our family has been stricken by an immense tragedy,' said Sergio Pininfarina, the company's honorary chairman, 'but we are determined to keep Andrea's memory alive in all of us.'

'The best way to honor my brother's memory,' said Paolo Pininfarina, 'is to continue to pursue with undiminished strength and determination the path that he had chosen for the company.'
