Subaru's Qashqai rival, the XV, will go on sale here in January and the car's UK importer hopes it will be able to match the Nissan crossover on price.

The XV was unveiled at the Shanghai motor show in April. Unlike the Qashqai, it will be four-wheel-drive only. The engine line-up will include a 1.6-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel, while a CVT gearbox will be available as an option.

The high value of the yen has already forced Subaru's importer, IM Group, to stop selling Daihatsus in the UK. There are no plans as yet to bring back Daihatsu, but the company expects that as the Japanese currency weakens, it will become more competitive on price.

A spokesman said: 'We want to sell the XV for the same price as the Qashqai we need to have a level playing field on price.

'If we are 2000 more expensive then it will be very difficult. If we are competitive on price and get customers into the car, then we're sure they will be convinced.'

A four-wheel-drive Nissan Qashqai, with a 2.0-litre diesel engine, costs just over 24,000.
