If Jeep models are known for anything, it’s their off-road prowess, what with the brand’s long history in the US military. That’s why the Jeep Avenger is so important – it serves as a reminder that Jeep can also make solid road cars that are easy to live with. And it’s just received a mid-life facelift to keep it fresh within the ever-competitive small SUV class.

Chief among the Avenger’s changes is its new styling, bringing it in line with the new Jeep Compass. Its seven-slot grille now comes backlit with LED lighting on higher trim levels, plus there’s new chunky cladding for additional protection off-road. The Avenger’s 17in and 18in alloys have also been redesigned, and the four-wheel-drive 4xe variant has new red accents to differentiate it from other versions.

There are some new materials on the door panels and lower dashboard, which aim to make it feel more plush inside, plus new red framing around Jeep’s Selec-Terrain button to make it easier to identify and switch the driving mode.

Buyers can now opt for two new exterior colours and a black roof.

Added tech includes new Matrix LED headlights and a new front parking camera, allowing for a 360-degree view around the car.

As before, you can have your Avenger with either petrol, mild hybrid or pure electric power (in the form of the Jeep Avenger Electric). Petrol versions have a slightly tweaked 1.2-litre engine, though power output remains the same at 99bhp, and it still comes matched with a six-speed manual gearbox. It features a new turbocharger which should make the engine more responsive at low revs, and this and other tweaks should also bring improvements to fuel efficiency.

Mild hybrid variants as badged e-Hybrid use that 1.2-litre engine plus some electric tech, putting out 108bhp. Above that, there’s the 4xe variant, which combines a petrol engine with two electric motors for four-wheel drive.

Electric variants have the same 54kWh (total capacity) battery and 154bhp motor, yielding an official range of 248 miles. That’s around the same as the rival Renault 4.

Inside, there’s the same 10.25in infotainment touchscreen (7in on lower trims) with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The new Jeep Avenger will arrive on UK shores late this year. Prices haven’t yet been revealed, but we’d expect them to start slightly higher than current ones, at around £27,000. That would put it in line with the Ford Puma, but it’s more expensive than the closely-related Peugeot 2008.
