The new Mazda 6 is a slinky, yet spacious saloon that has the Ford Mondeo squarely in its sights. Mazda is even hoping a few BMW 3 Series buyers could be tempted.
Low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions make the Mazda 6 affordable to run as either a private or a company car. The 148bhp diesel engine costs from 21,795, and is our pick of the range it's quick enough and is remarkably flexible.
When paired with a six-speed manual transmission, this engine emits just 108g/km of CO2, which puts it in a lower company car tax band than the cleanest Ford Mondeo.
Body control and grip are both good, but light and vague steering frustrate. More of a problem, though, is the 6's high-speed ride, which is far too firm for a car that'll do plenty of motorway miles.
The Mazda 6 is available as both a saloon and an estate, with a choice of four engines two petrols and two diesels. There are three trims SE, SE-L and Sport all of which are available with the 'Nav' suffix that adds TomTom-based satellite-navigation.
