McLaren 12C Spider unveiled

This is the new McLaren MP4-12C Spider, which is available to order now, at 195,000.

The 12C Spider is a convertible version of the MP4-12C coupe, with a folding hard-top roof. Its launch coincides with a range of 2013 model year upgrades to the MP4 12C, including a power upgrade and gearbox improvements.

McLaren says the 12C's carbonfibre 'Monocell' construction means the Spider's body requires no additional strengthening compared with the coupe. As a result, the Spider is only 40kg heavier overall.

The 12C's retractable hard-top roof can be raised or lowered in less than 17 seconds at the touch of a button, at up to 30kph (18.6mph).

Behind the seats there's a rear windscreen that can also be lowered electronically. In place, it acts as a wind deflector when the roof is folded; it can be lowered when the roof is up, to let more engine sound reach the cabin.

The 12C Spider and updated coupe model get an upgraded version of the existing twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 petrol engine, with power increased from 592bhp to 616bhp. Current 12C owners can have the same upgrade applied to their car, at no extra cost.

A 'vehicle lift system' is also new - it allows the car to be raised by 4cm at the front and 2.5cm at the rear, to give extra ground clearance over low-speed obstacles.

The 2013 model year MP-12C coupe costs 176,000, a 7500 increase over the outgoing car.
