Mercedes-Benz E-Class Cabriolet revealed

Mercedes-Benz's E-Class Cabriolet was today officially revealed, ahead of its on-sale date of March 2010.

Year-long top-down motoring
Among the new features on the car the fourth model in the E-Class range is an automatic draught barrier called Aircap, which Mercedes says makes top-down motoring a year-long reality.

Aircap comprises two separate parts a wind deflector on the windscreen frame and a draught stop between the two rear seats which both reduce turbulence in the cabin and hold in warm air.

The new car also has the latest version of the company's Airscarf neck-level heating system.

Versatile drop-top
Unlike many current convertibles, the new four-seat E-Class uses a folding soft-top rather than a metal roof. The roof is fully waterproof and can be automatically raised or lowered within 20 seconds at speeds of up to 25mph the car can even be taken through a car wash.

Safety matters
Safety has also been a priority in the car's development, and the car gets reinforced windscreen and side window pillars, as well as rollover protection, in the form of rollover bars in the rear head restraints, which are fired automatically if the car senses danger to any of the car's occupants.

In addition, there are seven airbags fitted as standard, including a driver's knee 'bag and for the first time in a Mercedes cabriolet head airbags housed in the door panelling. Sidebags in the rear are also available, as is drowsiness detection, a collision mitigation system and adaptive cruise control.

Engine options
Buyers of the new car will have the choice of seven engines four petrols and three diesels, with outputs ranging from 168- to 382bhp, and all but the most powerful earning the company's Blue Efficiency badge.

Full details of the range's prices and specification will be announced nearer the on-sale date.
