Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 355bhp and 332lb ft of torque, the CLA 45 AMG gets from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds and has a top speed of 155mph.

It has Mercedes' 4Matic four-wheel-drive system and has a seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox that can be operated using steering wheel-mounted paddles.

The driver can choose from three driving modes: Controlled Efficiency, Manual and Sport. Each setting adjusts engine and transmission responses.

Features include a double-declutching system, ESP stability control that can be fully deactivated race start mode, AMG sports suspension, AMG high-performance braking system and an AMG sports exhaust.

The CLA 45 AMG complies with the latest EU6 emissions legislation, does an average of 40.9mpg and emits between 161g/km and 165g/km of CO2.

Styling tweaks include a different grille, sills and black twin-spoke alloy wheels. Bi-xenon headlamps and LED tail-lights are fitted as standard.

Changes to the interior include sports seats, red seatbelts and aluminium trim to the dashboard.

Prices and final specifications are yet to be revealed. UK deliveries will begin in the autumn.
