New Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet to arrive in 2026

The G-Class family will grow next year with the arrival of a new open-top version – despite losing some bodywork, though, it won't be any cheaper than the regular car...

Maybe Thelma and Louise might have made their epic Grand Canyon jump if they were travelling not in a humdrum convertible, but instead in a convertible SUV capable of tackling their off-road adventure with ease. And if a remake of the 1991 film is ever on the cards, we'd like to propose that the new Mercedes G-Class Cabriolet be placed in a starring role.

This new convertible SUV will join the G-Class line-up next year, although unlike the regular car, it's expected only to be offered with petrol and diesel power, rather than as a fully electric car. That means buyers will get a choice of a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel in the G400d, a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol in the G500, and a 4.0-litre V8 petrol in the range-topping G63. In the regular G-Class, the latter engine needs just 4.4 seconds to reach 62mph.

These official images show the new model testing, revealing that the new G-Class Cabriolet is likely to feature a removable roof and rear section – not unlike older variants of the G-Class. The old G-Class Cabriolet went off sale in 2013.

How the addition – or removal – of that bodywork will impact rear space remains to be seen, but head room in the regular G-Class is already generous. But while a couple of six-footers are unlikely to complain about rear leg room, other luxury SUV options offer more space. The G-Class Cabriolet is likely to be slightly down on boot space compared with the regular car, which could be an issue for your holiday luggage.

While prices for the new car are a long way from being confirmed, it's expected to cost a pretty penny more than the regular G-Class, which starts from £141,065. A price of around £150,000 is therefore likely – meaning Thelma and Louise might need to break out the robbery gear in order to buy one.

The new G-Class Cabriolet isn't the only new version of the off-roader in the works, as Mercedes broadens the range for its most recognisable SUV. A smaller version, dubbed the 'Little G', will arrive in 2027, and will exclusively be available with electric power. That car will count the upcoming Land Rover Defender Sport among its key rivals, as well as Audi's planned off-roader.
