MG6 saloon on sale next month
* Four-door saloon joins existing hatchback * Shares same petrol engine; no diesel until late 2012 * Goes on sale in the UK in mid-July...
MG has added a four-door saloon to its MG6 range. It goes on sale alongside the existing hatchback next month, with each model costing between 500 and 1000 more than the equivalent hatchback.
While the hatchback is called the GT, the saloon will be called the Magnette, a name first used on MG cars in the 1930s.
The only major difference between the two models is at the rear, where the saloon has a very different profile and a larger boot, with a capacity of almost 500 litres.
According to MG, the new saloon will offer an affordable alternative to the likes of the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series.
Like the hatchback, the Magnette has been designed and is assembled in Longbridge (or MG Birmingham, as it's now known). It uses the same turbocharged 1.8-litre engine. This gives a 0-60mph time of 8.4 seconds, but averages only 35.6mph and emits a high 184g/km of CO2.
The saloon mirrors the hatchback range, and will be available in three trims: S, SE and TSE. However, the saloon starts at 15,995, 500 more than the hatch, with the range-topping TSE model costing 1000 more than the equivalent hatch.
For the next 18 months, these will be the only two models in MG showrooms. However, at the end of 2012, an MG-developed 1.9-litre diesel engine will join the MG6 range, which will make it more appealing to company car drivers.

At the same time, the all-new MG3 supermini will also go on sale. This is currently being tuned for the UK market. MG says the car will be aimed at the likes of the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Polo, as MG attempts to build itself into a mainstream company.
