We’ve long been fans of the Vauxhall Corsa, even going so far as to name it our overall Car of the Year in 2007. This neat-looking small hatchback makes even more sense as a used buy, because it suffers from heavy depreciation, so is now cheaper than many rivals. The comfortable ride, smart dashboard and spacious interior only add to its appeal. And for those looking for a little more of an adrenaline rush, the 202bhp VXR hot hatch model certainly delivers it.
6. Audi A3
The current Audi A3 is a splendid car, but the older model isn't great as a used buy. Not because it's a bad car, though: it’s good to drive, with great engines and a lovely, high-quality interior. The problem is, it holds its value very well, which makes it an expensive purchase – and what with its bland handling, that makes us say there are better used family cars out there, such as the Volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus.
The Volkswagen Golf is one of our favourite used cars. It blends a great range of engines with a classy, spacious interior, a comfortable ride, and enjoyable handling. It’s also handsome to look at, and quiet to ride in. In short, there isn’t much to dislike – though there are a few reliability issues surrounding automatic gearboxes and some diesel engines that are worth checking up on before you buy.
